What are amino acids?

Hvad er aminosyrer?

The bodys most important building block

Amino acids are the molecules that protein is made of.

When we consume protein through our diet, the proteins are broken down into individual amino acids. When that happens, the body can build the proteins that it needs. It does so by forming peptides that are chains of amino acids. This process is called protein synthesis.

This is the reason why amino acids are the bodys most important building blocks.

Essential amino acids

Proteins can be assembled from up to 22 different amino acids, two of which rarely occur (Selenocysteine and Pyrrolysine). There are two types of amino acids: essential and non-essential. From the 22 amino acids, 9 of them are essential. The difference is that the body can form the non-essential amino acids itself, while the essential ones must be supplied via the diet or as dietary supplements.

The 9 essential amino acids are:

  • Histidine
  • Isoleucine
  • Leucine
  • Lysine
  • Methionine
  • Phenylalanine
  • Threonine
  • Tryptophan
  • Valine

The amino acids in Vild Nords collagen

The protein quality in food depends on the overall amino acid composition, and therefore there is a difference in the nutritional value of the protein depending on the source. If you eat fish, meat and dairy products, you do not need large quantities to cover the amino acid requirement, while as a vegetarian you must pay particular attention to getting your essential amino acids in other ways. You can read more about proteins here.

Vild Nord's collagen contains 20 amino acids and all the essential ones, which the body cannot produce on its own.

BCAA & træning

BCAA is an abbreviation for branched-chain amino acids. Here we are talking about three essential amino acids, leucine, valine and isoleucine, which are believed to play a special role in building muscle tissue. For that reason, BCAA supplements are popular for people who are focused on building muscle.

Clycine, Hydroxyproline og Proline

Clysine, Hydroxyproline og Proline are essential amino acids to highlight, as they make up around 47% of the amino acid profile in our collagen.

Hydroxyproline is only found in collagen. Formation of Hydroxyproline requires vitamin C - therefore it is important to consume vitamin C in conjunction with collagen.
